Remplacer le JPEG par Windows Media Photo

Bientôt un WMP ou WDP aux côtés du WMA ou du WMV ? Microsoft a dévoilé mercredi lors de la conférence WinHEC 06 son nouveau format d’images, baptisé Windows Media Photo. Ce dernier, qui sera pris en charge nativement par Windows Vista, permettrait selon l’éditeur d’obtenir des images d’un poids deux fois inférieur à celui des images aux formats JPEG ou JPEG2000, à qualité équivalente.
Le format Windows Media Photo, dont la compatibilité avec Windows XP sera assurée ultérieurement, parviendra-t-il à s’imposer face au JPEG ? Sur le papier, ce nouveau format d’image, développé par les créateurs des formats Windows Media Audio (WMA) et Windows Media Video (WMV), ne manque pas d’arguments pour convaincre. Il devrait ainsi permettre de faire pivoter une image (rotation) sans qu’il soit nécessaire de recalculer cette dernière. On évoque également la possibilité de ne compresser qu’une partie de l’image, pour ne pas dégrader les éléments les plus importants.
