Pour Amnesty International, Internet est le nouveau front de la liberté d’expression

Dans son dernier rapport annuel, publié mercredi 23 mai, Amnesty International fait d’Internet le nouveau front pour la lutte en faveur des droits de l’Homme.”A l’ère de la technologie, Internet représente la nouvelle frontière dans la lutte pour le droit à la dissidence”, souligne Irène Khan, la secrétaire générale de l’organisation non gouvernementale, remarquant que de nombreux Etats s’évertuent à réduire au silence les “cyberdissidents”.
Pour Amnesty, la censure trouve un appui parmi les entreprises de télécommunications. “Les autorités de certains pays – Arabie saoudite, Biélorussie, Chine, Egypte, Iran et Tunisie, entre autres – s’assurent la collaboration des plus grandes sociétés informatiques mondiales pour contrôler les chats, supprimer des blogs, brider les moteurs de recherche et bloquer l’accès à des sites”, constate Mme Khan.
“Des gens sont emprisonnés en Chine, en Egypte, en Ouzbékistan, en Syrie et au Vietnam pour avoir publié et partagé des informations en ligne”, poursuit la responsable de l’ONG, dressant un panorama mondial des atteintes aux libertés. De fait, en Chine, l’accès à plusieurs centaines de sites internationaux a été bloqué et des milliers de sites chinois ont été fermés. Amnesty cite en exemple l’intellectuelle tibétaine Woeser, dont le blog a été fermé à plusieurs reprises, pour avoir critiqué le rôle de la Chine au Tibet.
RÉPRESSION ACCRUE
Le Vietnam est particulièrement pointé du doigt pour avoir cherché à renforcer son contrôle sur Internet en adoptant une nouvelle réglementation. Les exploitants de cybercafés et les fournisseurs d’accès sont désormais chargés de surveiller les internautes et l’interdiction d’accès à certains sites s’est accru. Des signataires d’une pétition en ligne appelant à un changement politique pacifique au Vietnam ont même été harcelés et interrogés, et leurs ordinateurs ont été confisqués.
Des blogueurs ont également été arrêtés et condamnés à des peines de prison ou à la flagellation en Iran, où “l’accès à Internet est de plus en plus strictement contrôlé”, s’indigne aussi l’association.
