Nokia lance son propre service GPS

Nokia a lancé jeudi dernier, un nouveau service dont la firme déclare qu’il réduira considérablement le temps que prend un appareil mobile GPS pour se situer, ouvrant ainsi de nouvelles occasions pour des services en ligne, qui s’appuient sur la localisation du titulaire.

Nokia estime que le service, offert initialement aux utilisateurs de son appareil phare N95, diminue le temps de démarrage à une minute, des trois minutes qu’il prend habituellement. Cette lenteur a, jusqu’à présent, inhibé l’adoption généralisée de la navigation par téléphone mobile. « Le service sera fiable en deçà d’une minute dans la plupart des pays », a promis Ralph Eric Kunz, chef des services de navigation et de cartes en ligne de Nokia, dans une entrevue avec l’agence Reuters.

Même à ce stade initial, les fabricants des combinés mobiles voient en la navigation GPS, l’une des prochaines grandes occasions d’affaires. La firme d’analyse Berg Insight prédit que les livraisons annuelles d’appareils mobiles capables de localisation GPS en Europe et aux Etats-Unis, atteindront 12 millions d’unités d’ici à 2009. Ce nombre se situait à 1 million en 2005.

Alors que la grande majorité des services actuels s’appuyant sur la technologie GPS emploit les stations radios des compagnies de services sans fil pour situer plus rapidement l’utilisateur, le nouveau service de Nokia outrepasse les réseaux des compagnies de services, mettant plutôt à profit des données stockées sur une carte SIM et un nouveau programme qui aide le téléphone à capter des signaux en provenance de satellites. Les puces GPS se servent des satellites orbitant autour de la Terre, pour situer exactement la position de l’utilisateur.

On retrouve ces puces dans des systèmes de navigation automobile, dont la popularité est monté en flèche au cours des dernières années, et, cette technologie fait aujourd’hui un saut vers les téléphones sans fil. Avec son prix de 700 euros, le N95 de Nokia n’est pas à la portée de toutes les bourses, mais la firme finlandaise vise à intégrer des puces GPS à un plus grand assortiment de modèles parmi ses gammes d’appareils. « Tous les téléphones GPS de Nokia auront accès au nouveau service », déclare M. Kunz.
