Contenu multimédia en ligne : La bibliothèque numérique mondiale devrait voir le jour en 2008

Ecouter un ancien esclave américain raconter son histoire, tourner les pages d’un livre évoquant d’anciens trésors égyptiens, étudier minutieusement de vieilles cartes en latin : tout cela devrait être possible à partir de 2008, grâce à la bibliothèque numérique mondiale.
Des journalistes ont pu avoir cette semaine à Paris un premier aperçu, par l’intermédiaire d’un prototype de cette réalisation conçue sur Internet, à l’initiative de la Bibliothèque du Congrès américain, de l’Unesco et des bibliothèques internationales qui sont partenaires. Les responsables du projet espèrent que le site pourra être lancé l’an prochain.
Abdul Waheed Khan, directeur adjoint de l’Unesco pour la communication et l’information et le bibliothécaire du Congrès, James Billington, ont signé un accord mercredi dernier, au siège de l’Unesco à Paris, permettant de faire avancer un peu plus le projet. Le concept est modelé sur le Library of Congress’ American Memory, un système d’archivage numérique du Congrès américain mis en place dans les années 1990 et qui dispose aujourd’hui de 11 millions de documents en ligne.
La bibliothèque numérique mondiale sera gratuite et multilingue avec des contributions venant du monde entier, incluant des livres rares, des films, des textes imprimés et des documents enregistrés en arabe, en chinois, en anglais, en français, en russe, en espagnol et en portugais, l’objectif est de permettre d’avoir accès à des documents de grande qualité, « quelle que soit la langue que vous utilisez », a expliqué John Van Oudenaren, principal conseiller travaillant sur ce projet.
« Trop de sites sont multilingues d’une manière très superficielle ». Des représentants d’Intel étaient présents au siège de l’Unesco à Paris, pour montrer comment le prototype fonctionne sur ses Classmate PC destinés aux enfants et des employés d’Apple avaient apporté des portables pour faire des démonstrations.
« Nous avons fourni une expertise (au projet) concernant la manière de digitaliser des documents, comment le faire avec moins d’argent, comment manipuler et classer le contenu numérique et le rendre accessible », a expliqué Hervé Marchet, directeur des marchés de l’éducation pour Apple en Europe, au Proche-Orient et en Afrique.
Depuis le début, les concepteurs du projet cherchent de l’aide pour le financement du projet, du côté du monde des affaires. En 2005, alors que James Billington venait de proposer le projet, Google a annoncé qu’il fournirait trois millions de dollars.
Les cinq autres institutions partenaires de la bibliothèque numérique mondiale sont la bibliothèque d’Alexandrie en Egypte, la Bibliothèque nationale d’Egypte, la Bibliothèque nationale du Brésil, la Bibliothèque nationale de Russie et la Bibliothèque d’Etat de Russie.
